I met Paul Franklin in Marshalls music store, and saw my first pedal steel. The Franklins came over to my house a few times and I gave young Paul a few tips. I seen Pauls pedal steel and I was convinced I wanted a pedal steel so I talked my parents into buying me a ShoBud pedal steel. Me and my dad went to Tenn. and picked out a guitar. Met Shot Jackson and his sons. Shot Jackson is who made my first pedal steel. It was the most beautiful guitar I ever seen. From that point on I practiced and practiced and was definitely hooked. I've played with many bands through the years. Worked with Dan Erlewine back in 1971 with five other guys from Ann Arbor, Michigan - Dan and I worked on an instrumental called "big beaver " at his house in ann arbor. after we broke up and went our different ways, Dan went on to make guitars and custom guitars -- it was fun working with the group . we played at the old "town & country" 5 nights a week. aahhh the good old days. Then some time later I worked with Tommy Sparks ( Mel Tillis lead guitar player ) for a few years, Waco Country Band, from there I worked with many other bands here and there. Now at the ripe old age of 60 I play with a old school buddy Ross Helco da drummer of the Silver Canyon Band. Having fun again playing country music. George -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just a brief from "Benji" Rich Sutherland -lead singer and guitar- Here goes!! I started playing guitar in 1959. My first band did Ventures covers only. No vocals !!! It was 1960 and they were called the "Renegades". I got my first real guitar from Massimino's Music in 1964.. It was a used 1957 Fender Stratocaster. I thought i was "THE" badass!! Until i saw Jim McCarty of Billy Lee and the Rivieras paying cash for a Gibson ES335 and a Vox Super Beatle amp at the other counter..I still have my strat and it plays like new. I wonder whatever became of McCarty??? Next band was "Fabian and the Magnetics" and it was the first band I could sing in. Then the band "Bradley and the Scallawags"..It was a Stones cover band and it was a blast! Managed by Ann Marsden, we won a lot of Battle of the Bands contests along the way. I played the local bar scene at night with the "Solitary Confinement" (while still in high school) cutting two singles with them in 1967.(( The two singles we cut in 1967 were"A Winner Never Quits" and "You Send Me" on the Sound Impression label..They are still available on "Garage Bands of the 60's" on Cicadelic Records..(just another tidbit, Joe Ford and Brian Dombrowski from Dearborn engineered and produced the records.. They went on to work with Ted Nugent on "Survival of the Fittest") Wonder whatever happened to Ted?? Oh Well...)) I left to tour with "Jay Walker and the Pedestrians" thru 1969..Then next band was the "Absolute Filth Blues Band"..I got fed up with all the crap and bid farewell to "ShowBiz" in 1972.. I started 90 Proof Band with Tom and Ross in 1982..In 2003 the three of us got with Gary and George to form SCB.. Still pickin' at 62 is pretty cool..at least my grandkids think it is. I really would like to see us record. It might surprise a lot of folks............. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just a brief from Tom Arbore- bass man and vocals- Here's my best guess. I think it was around 1967 that I started singing with a band called "Little Joe & the Sensations". We played at the Michigan State Fair and I was the lead singer. Played a few places and then hooked up with some different people from the Dearborn area and spent some time making soul music around Detroit. Around 1969- 1973 I played guitar and bass with a band called "The Velvet Glove". We were a three piece band that played weddings, parties, and whatever else we could find. I took a couple of years off from playing before I started playing bass with a bluegrass band called "The Red Eye Express". We played together for about four years before I decided to take another break from playing. In 1982 Ross,Benji and I were part of "The 90 Proof Band". We played around the area for about 6 or 7 years. Went into semi-retirement again until 2003 when "The Silver Canyon Band" was formed with our current members. We have a great time every time we get together, which never seems to be often enough. We all work day jobs, but I keep telling the guys that someday maybe we will win "The Horizon Award" of country music. What a stretch for a bunch of seniors, with over 200 years of musical experience. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just a brief from Gary Wayne - lead guitar and vocals---A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away … just kidding! I got my first guitar & amp (a Tiesco Del Ray strat copy and a Checkmate 8 in the winter of ’69. I then spent every free minute of the next 1½ years practicing my chops. I played most of my Jr. & High School years in a group called Renegade (w/ local axe slinger Tom Buck of Derringer) • we played everything from Big Band to current 70’s rock. After High School I entered the wedding band circuit playing 50/50 country/rock with a group called Westwind. In ’78-’79 co-formed Gunsmoke w/ Tom Hutchings, Vernon Lilly, & Jim Rise. That group had an awesome run through the 80’s. Since then I’ve worked with numerous local musicians, and I’m currently in the Silver Canyon Band. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Band Members on Facebook and Classmates.com --------------------------------------------Ross Helco -- Rick Sutherland
