    Become a Better Writer

Improve your writing skills while you become a better writer. Everyone has their own styles, techniques, and habits when it comes to writing. Some writers prefer to work in the morning, while other can only produce work at night. Regardless of when you decide to write there really is no correct way to go about it as long as you get to the end result, your desired piece of written work.
We all judge others work. We critique it by using our own styles and passing on our own methods as they way the work should be "fixed." Since it is impossible to please everyone, the best solution is to produce quality work. This can be accomplished by using strategies and techniques that will be accepted by many people. This is to say that you should follow standard writing rules when you are creating documents. This will help you become a better writer and improve your grammar skills. Try these 10 tips for becoming a better writer.
    1. You should pay strong attention to punctuation, especially to the correct use of commas and periods. Punctuation regulates the flow of your sentence. Even if your sentence is grammatically correct, the wrong usage of punctuation can make your text confusing and hard to read.
    2. Stay away from wordiness. Say as much as you can with the least amount of words. When using long drawn out sentences, you lose the reader's attention and this will not help you in your search on becoming a better writer. Here is an example: "you will have to..." replace with "you must."
    3. Creating and editing a document are separate. Do not edit while you are still writing, save it until the end
    4. Read the work of others. Use other author's sentence to help give you ideas on your own work. Reading undoubtedly helps you become a better writer.
    5. Read your work backwards when you are editing. This technique helps you find misspelled and missing words.
    6. Avoid using he/she said. Instead of using he/she said to describe every instance of dialogue between characters, show their actions. For example: "Pass that delicious looking meatloaf this way." With mouth watering and fork in hand, Will was ready to pounce."
    7. Read the work aloud. After editing the text, read it aloud. You will be able to catch awkward sentences and other missed errors easily.
    8. Go back and reedit previous work. Reedit your older articles and pieces. You will notice growth in your writing and you will also see your improvement in your writing skills.
    9. Learn to accept criticism. Not everyone will like your work, but most people will appreciate the effort you put into it. Reflect and take into consideration the comments left by others. They may have caught mistakes you were unaware of.
    10. Watch out for homonyms. Homonyms are words that have the same spelling or pronunciation but different meanings. Example: effect and affect.

Although there are many more strategies than the ones I listed to help authors on becoming a better writer. Try these techniques the next time you are writing and add techniques of your own. Let me know which tips worked best for you.
